This presentation starts by off looking at the key issues facing individuals as they approach retirement especially the big 5 unknowns which face most individuals:
- They don’t know long they will live
- How much inflation will erode future spending power
- Unsure about level of interest rates in the future
- Outlook for equity markets still uncertain
- What will be the state of their health in future
Then we consider how Fixed Term policies can be used to meet client’s retirement income needs.
Many customer needs not met by guaranteed annuities and drawdown may be too risky for some clients.With changing patterns of retirement there is greater need for income flexibility and many clients have varying need for income. Inflation erodes spending power of level annuity so important to consider annuity / DD where there is scope for future income growth.
One of the advantages of a fixed term income plan over a lifetime annuity is the choice of death benefits and the ability to apply for enhanced annuity should health deteriorate.
Finally, advisers are encouraged not to take a black and white approach to retirement but to consider a portfolio approach which might include a fixed term annuity.
